We have come to love and appreciate the power of the mighty mussel. In which only several benefits of mussels are noted below.

Greenshell Mussels

In New Zealand we grow our native Greenshell mussels, often referred to as Kutai; whilst the rest of the world enjoys Blueshell mussels.

Protein, Omega 3 + More

Mussels are an excellent food source, packed with plenty of protein, Omega 3, Selenium, Iron, Vitamin B12, Iodine, Magnesium and Calcium (Aquaculture New Zealand).

Mussels, The Feeder Filters

Mussels are incredible for the natural ecosystems, particularly as mussels are filter feeders, a typical adult mussel filters at least 120 LITRES of water per day (A+ Sustainable Aquaculture).

Diverse Habitats

The positive impact of mussel farms includes the support of an abundant and diverse habitat creation for fish, marine mammals, and seabird populations (Stenton-Dozey & Broekhuizen, 2019).

Low Carbon Protein

"A recent independent life cycle assessment study found that our farmed NZ mussels and oysters have among the lowest carbon footprints of all animal proteins: in comparison Beef = 50KG C02/ 100Grams Protein, Oysters = 3.7KG C02/ 100Grams Protein, whilst Mussels = 1.8KG C02/ 100Grams Protein" (A+ Sustainable Aquaculture).

Sustainable Values

At QE we are proud to add our own data for mussel rope, over the typical 10 to 15 years lifetime of approx. 120GRAMS of plastic QE Mussel Rope per meter, can become 30KG of high-quality protein meat (not including the shell). We consider this true sustainability values, verse our single use plastics competitors.

Joe's Mussel Handbook

At QE, our mission is to support the aquaculture industry by producing top-quality ropes, floats, and twines. Our “global mussel expert,” Joe Franklin Jr., stands out as an unparalleled industry leader.

Joe’s expertise drives QE’s innovation. It often starts with industry feedback or requests, followed by brainstorming and research – sometimes conducted in his own backyard. After that, larger trials are conducted with industry partners, ultimately leading to the introduction of new products to the farming environment.

Joe recently put together a Mussel Handbook  –  please feel free to download or contact us for any more information regarding mussel farming practise.
